How to make money of Christmas Lights
Even this idea comes from Mitch Denny I believe. As my short term memory is of an older type (I had my 30th bday last week) I cannot remember if this idea came entirely from Mitch or if some of it might be mine as well.
Some day last week Mitch went for a drive to see some Christmas lights here in Canberra. He found it difficult to find these lights! A lot of driving (not good for the climate!) and just a few lights.
The idea:
Create a website where people can advertise their Christmas lights. You should be able to upload some photos to illustrate your work. Of course the address will be there and preferably even dates and times when the lights will be turn on (imaging a family driving 50 km to see the light but the house owner won’t be at home and the light won’t be turned on).
The money in the project is mostly in the adds. It should be free for people to advertise their homes/lights but the advertising spece on the site will cost. Imagine grand parents browsing the web to find some Christmas lights (so they can take their grand children there) and on the very useful site for the lights, they’ll get the perfect Christmas present presented as well. Christmas is the number one consumption time so getting peoples attentions just a week before Christmas – it’s gold!
I’m sure there are hundreds of families just here in Canberra who have spent a fair amount of money, time and energy putting up these lights. They’ll be more than happy to show these lights to their community. Hook some Google maps to the website as well and off you go. In five years time you can sell the site to Google for 1 billion dollars (xmas.google.com)
Good luck!

This week I’ve been on a .Net Pro programming course. I’ve certainly learned a few things and I got a new business idea as well. The seed to this idea came from our teacher Mitch telling how he was asked to optimise an application running slow. The only thing he actually did was to increase the marquee bar speed. However the customer experienced that the entire system was running faster after that.
Now the new idea…
“Increase-your-system-speed Consulting”.
On the soft side there are quite a few tweaking alternatives, on the hard side adding more memory, buying a new mouse or dusting off the monitor would certainly make some users to experience that their machines are running much faster now than they did before.
If you have an similar stories or ideas as Mitche’s marquee bar speed-up technique, please share them…
